1. rule of thirds
2. framing
3. dominant foreground, contributing background
4. silhouette
5. selective focus
6. variance of perspective
7. lighting
8. decisive moment
9. color in an otherwise monotone scene
10. disorder in an otherwise orderly scene

To this list add the KISS rule:
The KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID rule and you will be alright.
